A basic, yet essential, rule of thumb is to keep it as simple as you can, interior designers these days often work to make sure everything about a room has clean lines. Simple furnishings can make for a great room, such as having tab top voile curtains or cheap Roman blinds in your windows and a flat screen TV. Make sure that you have adequate lighting, as the wrong type of lighting will not do justice to all the hard work you have done to get you room designed the way you want it. Lighting can be subdued or bright and whether you use overhead lighting or ambient lighting use it to show off your room at its best!
If you really don't have any inspiration it is a good idea to look online at some interior design ideas. There may be part of a room that you like such as the rugs, so simply take certain aspects of one room and then certain aspects of another room and bring them together, making the design into your unique creation!
